The original 1490 statue – Possibly a simpler crown on Our Lady with no evidence of a crown on the infant Jesus and no sceptre. Tradition holds that the statue was kept safe by George Gordon, 1st Marquess of Huntly and Chief of Clan Gordon, whose family helped protect Catholic life in Scotland during the turbulent times of the Reformation. After three generations of hiding the statue it was sent to the Low Countries for safe keeping. Sadly, she is now a Belgian National Treasure.
The statue’s original title has been lost in time. The title ‘Our Lady of Good Success’ was given to her in 1626 on her arrival in the Low Countries by the Spanish Archduchess Isabela, who attributed her arrival with winning a battle. The Archduchess covered her in gold and jewels. During the French revolution in the 1790s, she again went into hiding and in 1832 received a fresh makeover with crowns and sceptre. As we see today.
Our New Dawn solid wood replica, made in India, stands 4.5 high. New Dawn in Scotland has the privilege of owning this beautiful replica which has visited all the Scottish Cathedrals and many parishes where New Dawn events have taken place. When processed, four men are required to carry her. She is a Eucharistic statue. Presenting to us the body and blood of her Son. All other replicas have missed out the grapes, which represent His Blood. She is now and forever 'Our Lady of Aberdeen'. Our Lady of Aberdeen pray for us.
